The Wall Is Coming Down

We haven't posted anything for a couple of weeks as the work that's progressing is very 'bitty' with no one thing to show. I can assure you though the work is still continuing at pace. We have had concrete pours, steel frames going in, blockwork going down, holes in walls filled, foundation work on the access ramp; the list goes on.

Todays post is focussing on a wall that needed to be taken down and rebuilt unexpectedly. This was for two reasons. Firstly the existing wall, which used to be between the Ladies toilets and the corridor between Cloister Way and the Café, was in a very poor condition and was virtually falling down. Secondly, when the builders removed the plaster board wall from the ladies toilets they discovered that the main beam behind the stud work was rotten. Now this is worrying enough just by itself, but when you realise this beam supported the floor of the Ladies and Girls Choir Rehearsal Room above, its terrifying. The floor above was effectively being supported by a stud wall. This is not a recognised or recommended way of supporting floors.

The result of the discoveries above was that, following consultation with the Architect, Structural Engineers and Building Conservation, that the old wall needed to be taken down and a new supporting wall constructed in its place. This, as you can see, is now well underway and expected to be completed by the end of this week.
